There is a growing need to train the motor functions of the tongue especially for the aging population as it plays important roles in feeding, swallowing, and articulation. We have developed a tongue-operated joystick device for the dynamic resistance training of the tongue. The device can apply a viscoelastic resistance load that is proportional to the position@and speed of the stick tip by an impedance control for a DC geared motor. Training for tracing line drawings of a circle and a triangle was executed using the device. During operation, the tongue moves in a wide area against the resistance; therefore, the simultaneous improvement of muscle ability and mobility is expected. Two healthy subjects participated in the training every other day for four weeks. The tracing of four laps of two line drawings was repeated three times per day. The subjects were instructed to attempt to trace target line drawings as accurately and quickly as possible. With continued training, they operated the joystick smoothly and accurately and their ranges of motion and muscle abilities improved.
