A nonlinear tone control method to analyze the relation between the physical characteristics of the minute level of reproduced sound and sensuous evaluation is described. A narrow frequency-band signal is filtered from sound source and then the amplitude v of the signal is compressed or expanded successively by sgn(v)|v|n. The evaluation on a series of processed sound was done by subjects using the pair comparison method. The sound which is expanded the frequency band around 200Hz is to feel "hard", and those compressed or expanded around 5 kHz to feel "metallic" or "soft", respectively. Therefore, this tone control method can be used effectively.
